Keeping our children healthy without dangerous medications

A large part of childhood is about getting sick, or so it may appear. Our children seem to always be coming home with the sniffles or something itchy from school or their friends in the neighborhood. It is important that we do not jump too quickly to an over the counter (OTC) medication. Many of these illnesses can be treated with a less harsh herbal remedy, good nutrition, and or rest, which will work with your child’s body to overcome whatever ails them. Many OTC medicines are much too strong for our little ones, they treat only the symptoms, and can cause damage to their little bodies in other areas. We must also question the medication being prescribed by our doctors. I have heard of girls as young as twelve years of age being placed on the birth control pill. Not as a contraceptive, but to help regulate their menstrual cycle or prevent acne. This is crazy! There are many safer alternatives then the birth control pills which by the way are full of hormones. Which also by the way, decreases their vitamin B assimilation, have been linked to higher incidences of depression, and may be related to miscarriages when these little girls are older and ready to have a baby.

As far as the irregular cycles, this is typical for a young girl, whose body is just working through these new hormones, it’s normal. What can help is decreased screen time, (this means television, iPads, computers, or any other electronic devises), plenty of time outside in the sun, and a good night’s rest, in a dark room. This will help the pituitary gland regulate the hormones. This is so, easy and there are no bad side effects.

A word about antibiotics. Antibiotics are now being prescribed or even requested by parents to treat many concerns that could be treated with a less harsh treatment. Did you know one dose of an antibiotic as a child has been linked to later concerns as an adult with gut health, also known as leaky gut? Antibiotics can really mess with their microbiome making it very hard for their body to digest the foods they eat and absorb the healthy nutrients their body needs to stay healthy. Nutrients necessary for your child’s developing body to grow strong and healthy. A leaky gut has been linked to many dangerous life threatening ailments like auto-immune disease or a hyper or hypo active thyroid.

So, take a step back before deciding to medicate your child and see if there might be a safer alternative.
