What do we learn in school.
Your first thought is probably, how to read, how to do math, history, and other academic skills.
But, when you really look at what is being taught or better yet, look at how we are taught, your answers might change.
What we are taught How we translated the information
Rules- you must follow the rules I cannot be trusted
No looking around- Focus on the front of the classroom There is only one person who can share information- the teacher
No moving- Don’t move your body You cannot trust your body
Don’t talk to your neighbor Creating connections is not important
There’s only one way to learn There is only one source of learning
Don’t talk back/ Don’t speak your mind What you think is not important
Wait your turn Others come first
Ignore your body’s signals You must follow the school schedule
Only speak if you have the correct answer Not important to be creative or you must not be smart
You need to fit in/Conformity rules You don’t fit in
Learning happens on a schedule. A schedule that shcool chooses You do not have any control over your learning
Some of these skills being taught are not intentional, they are by-products of the way in which we teach. These skills help create a calm classroom, but not neccessarily strong, confident people.
The classroom environment is conducive to keeping control of large groups of children, but not to the health of our children. There are flickering lights, hard chairs that children hunch over, and served unhealthy meals that are eaten in a crowded loud room.
Some of these conditions we have control over. Being aware is a first step.
