Acts of Altruism
By conducting acts of altruism or kindness you too can reap the benefits of a happier healthier life. Just think how groovy you will feel when you make another person smile. You feel better, the recipient feels better, and you just made the world a more compassionate place. Something we can all agree is a groovy thing to do.
Donating to a charity is a wonderful act, but for you to really feel groovy, it is better for you see the person(s) you are helping or have a hands on experience in positively touching the life of another person or persons. Here are a few ways you can give to others, even in your busy schedule.
- Tell a stranger you like his or her hair, shoes, clothes….
- Offer a hand to that mother who is juggling her children and her grocery basket
- Allow that car to enter your lane.
- Buy an extra piece of fruit while you do your shopping and leave it in the work fridge for another.
- Read to a classroom or to an elderly person in a care facility once a month.
- Collect clothes and/or food and take it to a shelter.
- Smile and say hello to a person you pass on the street.
- Help work in a community garden or plant a tree for a school.
- Bring flowers to a co-worker who needs to smile.
- Leave a sticky note with a kind message on your bosses computer screen.
- Hold the door open for the person behind you.
- Offer to walk a neighbor’s dog.
- Pick up groceries for someone who is home bound. (Since you are at the grocery store anyways)
Even small acts can boost your mood and your health.
I am sure there are thousands more ways to give. I’d love to hear them.
