Intuition Strengthening

We all have it, intuition, some of us are just better at sensing it. We’ve all had them, those feelings in our gut that are sending us messages, which we often mistake as feelings of uneasiness. How often do you trust your gut feelings? Imagine you are waiting for the elevator, when the doors open a single person stands there, looking creepy. Your gut says, don’t get in the elevator. But, often we talk our-self out of trusting our gut’s warning signs. We tell ourselves, “This is silly, I’m sure I’ll be safe” or “Don’t be such a wimp!”, or because we don’t want to be rude or look awkward by not getting into the elevator, we go against what our intuition is telling us.

Intuition has kept humans alive for hundreds of years and it can be a great support to you in your decision making process. Think of your intuition as good advice from a friend. Take it into consideration when making choices. If we look again at the creepy person in the elevator, what’s your gut saying? You can make wiser decisions. You can choose to ride down in the elevator, but because you heeded your intuition you know that you need to be vigilant and have a safety strategy in place, such as talking on the phone to a friend who knows where you are and placing yourself in a position near the door. Unless your intuition is sending you giant waving red flags, “Don’t get in the elevator!” then who cares what creepy person thinks! Walk away. If you have a hard time doing this, just pretend you forgot something. “Darn I forgot my ——-. I need to go back to my office.” You may wonder later if you were being silly, but hey! At least you are alive to do so.

So, how do you strengthen your intuition and use it as a resource.

The easiest way to do this is to just acknowledge it. Pay attention to subtle feelings your body is sending you and thank it for doing so. When making decisions, feel the answer in your body and give this feeling as much weight in your decision making as you do your list of pros and cons that you created intellectually. To help you do this, find a quiet place to sit, then ask your self the question. Don’t try to answer the question but, rather feel how your body responds to the question. Do you feel heaviness, lightness, a surge of energy, or a sudden pain? In time, you will have a stronger sense of what your intuition is telling you and the confidence to use these feelings wisely.

Research has also shown that practicing yoga is also a great way to connect with your body, recognizing subtle feelings within your body, and building your intuition. Yoga teaches you to concentrate on your breath and how your body feels in that moment. As you begin to gain a stronger sense of what your body is telling you, it will become much easier for you to make life choices that benefit you and your health. Our body knows what it needs, we just need to be better at listening to it.
