We have all heard of the dangers found in plastics made with BPA. But, what about other plastics? Do they also contain toxic chemicals? All plastics have a Resin Identification Code (RIC) which helps the consumer identify what they are purchasing, but what do these codes mean? To help answer that question, I have attached a quick cheat sheet which lists the codes and what they mean to you and your body.

As you reveiw the chart, you will find some plastics have been deemed as safe. But these safety standards are based on minimal use and when containers are stored with in a specific temperature range. Dangers arise when plastics have been heated, such as in a microwave, sitting in the back of a parked car in the summer, or placed in a warm garage or storage room. Concerns have also been shown with plastic containers as they age. So, resturaunts that refil their ketchup bottles or if you refill your plastic water bottle there may be concerns of leaching of toxic chemicals.

Because many plastics have been associated with endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC’s) as well as containing toxic metals that have been linked to thyroide-hormon disruption & monomers, which have mutation inducing and cancer causing effects, I have chosen not to use plastic if all possible. I have been able to store most items I need in glass or stainless steal containers. This is a great reason to visit the bulk area of your stores to find items that are not stored in plastics. If you need to purchase an item wrapped in plastic, remove the plastic and dispose of it immediately. Placing your items in a safer medium.

Be safe, be beautiful,
