Using the sun to promote body health,
With the arrival of spring and the longer days, now is the perfect time to spend some morning time in the sun. The sun has received a bad rap and because of this, we have grown to fear the damaging effects the sun’s rays can have on us. But we should not fear the sun, the sun offers our bodies healing potential which is far more beneficial then any pill can offer us and well worth letting go of our misguided fears of skin aging.
To list a few of the sun’s powerful benefits:
- Our body uses the sun’s UVB rays, synthesizing the to become vitamin “D”. It does this by converting the cholesterol in the skin cells. This production of vitamin “D” supports bone health, strengthens our teeth, protects against dementia, and supports the immune system.
- The early morning sun’s rays helps our body to recognize that it is morning, telling our body it is time to wake up and start the day. When the sun enters the pineal gland, it triggers the production of cortisol. This gives us the energy needed to get moving. this energy is better energy than a cup of coffee. Plus, unlike coffee, this release of cortisol begins the hormonal cycle which leads to the later release of melatonin production, which will help us sleep better at night. Win, Win!
- Just as the sun offers energy and life force to the plant kingdom, the sun offers his energy, to any person who wants to take it. Standing in nature and feeling the sun’s warmth and energy entering our body is both meditative and healing. Imagine the warmth enveloping any areas in your body needing attention. Let the sun’s warmth heal you from the inside out.
- Sunlight has been known to lift your spirits, relieving feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression. Sunlight produces serotonin, the feel-good hormone. And the best part about using sunlight is, it’s free!
- Sunlight can help heal wounds by offering disinfecting effects. The rays also support healing of psoriasis, acne, and fungal infections.
- Sunlight can enhance the body’s ability to deliver oxygen to the tissues and blood. And in a research completed in Europe the sun’s rays even cleanses the blood.
- Being in sunlight can lower blood pressure.
This being said, you can have too much of a good thing. Sunlight is safest in the early morning hours and the evening hours, when it is on the horizon. But hey, who doesn’t love watching a sunrise or a sunset? This enjoyment of the sun also needs to happen without the added precautions of sunscreen. Besides the horribly dangerous chemicals added to sunscreen, the use of a sun screen blocks the beneficial effects of the sun. So, let’s get outside and use the sun to help heal us!
